TOURIST GUIDE

1 Our Beaches

Rimigliano Costal Park / Parco costiero di Rimigliano

A well-known and popular destination for sea lovers, the Rimigliano Coastal Park is found in the southern part of the municipality of San Vincenzo and offers more than 6 km of coast, a sandy beach featuring a protected dune system.
It embodies the beaches of the Tuscan Coast, it is enhanced with pine and live oak forests with umbrella-like foliage and Mediterranean scrub, sculpted by the always present sea breeze that relieves the summer heat.  The panorama is the blue sea and the Tuscan Archipelago.  Ideal for those seeking relaxation and complete enjoyment immersed in nature, the beach in the Rimigliano Coastal Park is easily reached.  The beach is also equipped with bathroom facilities located in specific points and it is possible to find marked paths and interesting descriptions about the area, its history and the species that inhabit it.

The beach between San Vincenzo and Marina du Castagneto
“La Conchiglia”

North of the tourist port of San Vincenzo, there is a beautiful coastal area that connects the two towns, San Vincenzo and Castagneto Carducci. There are both free and equipped beaches in this area.
After the last bathing establishment on the north side, “La Conchiglia”, you will find 7 km of free beach that is very beautiful, clean and wide.

City center beach

San Vincenzo is a coastal town whose city center, with a pedestrian area, runs parallel to the coast, a few meters from the beach.  This beach, mostly sandy, can therefore be reached by foot and runs close to the tourist port.  In the central part of the beach it is possible to find many bathing establishments and some free beach areas.

Princess beach / Spiaggia la principessa

Moving toward the south, before reaching Rimigliano Coastal Park, there is another beach area, outside of the city center but still accessible on foot and by bike.  The beach here is also sandy and widens more and more as it continues south.  Here you can also find both equipped bathing establishments and areas of free beach.

Gulf of Baratti / Golfo di Baratti

Marvelous with a breathtaking view, the Gulf of Baratti is a must for anyone visiting our area.
The beach of the Gulf of Baratti is sandy, with beautiful colors, ranging from amber to very dark colors, due to the presence of iron minerals from Etruscan mining.  The seabed is shallow and the water is very clear.
It is possible to rent small boats and to book excursions to fully enjoy the truly unique landscape.

Fary’s hole / Buca delle fate

Between the capes of Piombino and Populonia you find the Fairy’s Hole, an enchanting rocky beach.
To reach the Fairy’s Hole, it is necessary to follow the road that goes from the Gulf of Baratti to Populonia and, just before arriving in the town center, you will see “del Reciso” parking lot where you can leave your car.  The path that leads to the coast is marked, it branches first into the woods, until it ends in the low Mediterranean scrub. It is about 3 ½ km long and suitable for everyone.  It will be necessary to walk about 20 minutes before reaching the cliff.  Since the path is full of things to see, such as Etruscan tombs, unique views and unusual plants, the time may vary, making the trip interesting and pleasant.

SAN SILVESTRO ARCHAEOLOGICAL MINES PARK / PARCO ARCHEO-MINERARIO DI SAN SILVESTRO

Complete information: www.parchivaldicornia.it

Temperino Museum / Museo del Temperino Duration of visit:  20 minutes
The Temperino Museum is located in buildings dating back to the early 1900s, a period of mining production.  In the exhibit it is possible to discover the historical and environmental aspects of the area, the geological appearance of the deposits, and their exploitation and use over time by man.
Your visit will prepare you for the other stages in your journey of discovery in the San Silvestro Archaeological Mines Park.
In the following sections, we will present to you all the stages of the journey but we invite you to visit the official website for more information.

Duration of visit 40 minutes
Route that enters into the heart of the mine.  Equipped with a helmet, visitors are guided inside the mine, into a 360 meter tunnel where you can see evidence of the time, such as rocks, minerals and traces of the work by the miners.

Mining Machines Museum / Museo delle Macchine Minerarie Duration of visit 15 minutes
Route that shows the machinery used in the last, most recent phase in the mine.  The building that houses the museum, is in fact, the last remaining well of the 5 that existed in this area, a service building with the winch still inside that carried water to the mine.  There is an indoor and outdoor area.

Miners Museum / Museo del Minatore Duration of visit 15 minutes
After a short walk, you will reach the “Morteo”, a service building used by workers as a canteen and changing area.  Today it hosts sections dedicated to workers, to their lives and testimonies, including the history of the trade unions through photos and documents.  A hard life, also documented with video interviews.

Lanzi-Temperino Tunnel / Galleria Lanzi – Temperino Duration of visit 50 minutes
The direct Lanzi-Temperino tunnel, finished in the ‘60s is today traveled with a small train that ends at the Rocca of San Silvestro.  An enjoyable route for young and old to discover the underground world of mines.

Rocca San Silvestro Duration of visit 40 minutes
Thanks to the train you will reach Rocca San Silvestro, the ancient mining village built around the local deposits of copper and silver lead. The metals were sought because they were needed to produce Tuscan coins.  Here, still today, it is possible to see clear traces of the settlement including remains of houses, the church, the cemetery, an interesting discovery of the life of its past inhabitants.  It is possible to reach the Rocca following the marked trail. Comfortable clothing and hiking or athletic shoes are recommended.

Via delle Fonti Duration 1 hour (easy)
A path surrounded by greenery, in the woods, which starts in the park and ends in the center of the historic medieval village of Campiglia Marittima.  On the way it is possible to not only see the natural beauty but also historical traces, such as the remains of a 19th century aqueduct.

Archeo Trekking – Via del Temperino Duration 20 minutes (easy)
This trail follows the abandoned rail line which was used to transport the ore.  The large deposits of waste material visible along the trail are evidence of the centuries of mining.

Archeo Trekking – Via dei Manienti Duration 1 hour (difficult)
Hiking trail that leads to Rocca San Silvestro and for this reason it is more challenging.  Of interest, in addition to the history, is the natural appearance of the path with a thick vegetation of the typical plants of the area.

Archeo Trekking – Via delle Ferruzze Duration 1 hour 10 minutes (difficult)
A trail that follows the veins of the ore and also shows the entrance to the ancient medieval mine and the open-air quarries. Along the trail there are also abandoned mining landfills, recognizable by their yellow and red colors. Archeo Trekking – Via dei Lanzi Duration 1 hour 10 minutes (moderately difficult)
A circular route, somewhat challenging, where you can admire the historic mining buildings.
